I successfully manage to query the same SQL server in Windows using ODBC connections to the SQL server on our LAN. I tried to follow the Office Support info available on this link: We also have another SQL Server (SQL Server Express 2012) that I also access via ODBC on Windows Excel 2016. I am having trouble connecting to a SQL Server (2008 R2) via the new Excel 2016 for Mac SQL Server ODBC New Database Query feature.
